Working in an office seems like one of the safest jobs one can have. Although this is generally the case, data from the AWCBC indicates that there are over 3,000 accepted lost time claims due to injury in the Canadian business sector every year.
Over 90% of these injuries involve muscles, tendons, and ligaments, which are commonly grouped under the musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs are not accidents in a traditional sense, since posture and ergonomics account for the majority of illnesses and these happen over extended periods of time. Serious injuries resulting from falls, slips, and emergency situations do take place once in a while, but the majority of grievances are not inadvertent by and of themselves.
With appropriate safety training, the rate of MSDs among office workers can be dramatically reduced, which makes it all the more important that employees benefit from sufficient and appropriate safety courses.
