Working in oil & gas may be lucrative, but it can also be fairly dangerous for most employees. According to the Workers Compensation Board of Alberta, the occupational fatality rate recorded in Western Canada in this industry was higher than the average of all other industries combined between 2001 and 2010. Since 2011, this trend has seen a significant drop as safety standards have gradually become more rigorous.
However, workplace injuries remain common and continue to be costly for both workers and the companies that employ them. Between 2013 and 2017, for example, falls accounted for 22% of accidents and cost employers more than $18 million in claims. Bodily reactions to the workplace environment were the cause of 10% of accidents, while exposure to noxious substances led to 4% of injuries. Overall, more than $70 billion were lost on account of occupational accidents.
One significant way to further decrease the frequency of fatalities in the oil & gas industry, as well as the number and cost of workplace injuries is to ensure proper safety training for all employees. Listed below are the recommended safety courses for the most common jobs in oil & gas.
