Waste Management is a sector that employs relatively few workers compared to other industries. Nevertheless, waste management officers, technicians, and drivers perform tasks that are more dangerous than we might think. Between 2003 and 2017, for instance, WorkSafeNB reported that waste collection workers were three times more likely to get injured on the job than any other employees in the province of New Brunswick.
In addition to physical over-exertion, employees in Waste Management are likely to come in contact with hazardous materials and potentially life-threatening bloodborne pathogens. Furthermore, drivers in this sector are faced with both the dangers associated with the Transportation industry and the perilous nature of some of the waste they take as cargo.
In spite of the fact that Waste Management remains a narrow industry, it is essential that all employees in this sector are made aware of the potential hazards associated with their jobs and how these accidents can be prevented.
